V LATIN AMERICA- EUROPE MEETING
RENEWABLE ENERGIES AND SUSTAINABLE DEVEOPMENT

For Spain, the European Union and Latin America, economic development and prosperity depend very much on energetic policies and in particular the protection of the environment and the rational usage of natural resources. Economic development cannot take place if it seriously harms the environment.

The present Meeting will pay attention to the energetic policies of the two regions and the future cooperation in important areas as climate change, renewable energies, biodiversity, the desertification process and the water management.

This Meeting will take place after the Lima Euro-Latin American Summit and will be an excellent opportunity to exchange views about future specific cooperation between Governments, International Organisms, the Private Sector and the Civil Society.

The energetic policies of Spain, the European Union and Latin America will be the object of analysis and discussion. In particular renewable energies, the development of new and efficient energetic technologies, promoting clean production and specifically the cooperation between Spain, Europe and Latin America, in the field of technological investigation, technological transference and in the creation of mix societies.

The dimension of consumers and educational aspects will be important elements in the debate.

Climate change is one of the most important challenges that Europe and Latin America face. In the case of the Iberoamerican Continent, we have to affirm the “El Niño” change of cycle, the need to pay greater attention to the prevention of natural disasters and how could clean mechanism projects be developed.

In the biodiversity scope, Latin America is a continent with mega diversity as is the case of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador and Central America.

The Meeting debate will concentrate on preventing the loss of biodiversity in the year 2010 and a drastic reduction of CO2 emissions.

The good usage of natural resources and preventing the process of deforestation will be key facts of discussion and exchange of experiences.

Spain and Europe will set out their initiatives in this scope.
